Under the National Framework for Prevocational Medical Training:

  • PGY1s & 2s are required to meet with their term supervisor at the beginning of each term
  •  To review the term description (find here) and agree on learning objectives and assessments
  • Discuss learning outcomes to focus on during the term.
  • To view the AMC 'beginning of term discussion' template click

Note:

  • PGY2s in a specific training program e.g. BPT / Psychiatry etc are EXEMPT from the Framework
  • PGY3s and above have the OPTION to participate in the AMC framework but are not mandated to do so.

The beginning of term discussion has two components:

  1. Orientation 2. Goal setting

 Orientation includes:

  • unit culture & expectations of unit
  • supervision key contacts & expectations
  • PGY1 & 2 roles and responsibilities
  • training and education opportunities
  • approach & expectations re: completion of assessments & EPAs

Goal setting includes:

  • Learning objectives and any specific learning outcomes for the term. e.g.
    • suturing for a procedurally based rotation
    • develop a concise presentation for an undifferentiated illness rotation
    • PGY2 - a specific interest or carried over objective  identified as an intern

Term Descriptions can guide the discussion on the NH Medical Education channel Teams channel here. To join the Teams channel click

Term Supervisors clickIf you don't meet your Term Supervisor, you can meet with another consultant/Fellow in the unit. Any concerns email: Northern Doctors Education.

The 'Beginning of term discussion' is a mutual obligation between you and the Supervisor. You are expected to approach the supervisor for this discussion and the supervisor is expected to provide the conditions for the discussion to be completed.

Is the beginning of term discussion the same as unit orientation? No. It is different. A unit orientation outlines the mechanics of the term e.g. how the clinical day runs, work expectations and the structure of the unit.
