Entrustable Professional Activities – EPAs

What are EPAs? 
EPAs are routine clinical tasks that an Intern or PGY2 carries out under supervision. EPAs provide opportunities for regular, constructive feedback, supporting the ongoing development of clinical knowledge and skills.  There are four EPAs in the AMC Framework:
EPA 1 Clinical Assessment EPA 2 Recognition and care of the acutely unwell patient EPA 3 Prescribing EPA 4: Team Communication
Conduct a clinical assessment of a patient incorporating history, examination and formulation of a differential diagnosis and a management plan including appropriate investigations Learn about EPA 1

 

Recognise, assess, escalate appropriately and provide immediate management to deteriorating and acutely unwell patient Learn about EPA 2

 

 

Appropriately prescribe therapies (drugs, fluids, blood products, inhalational therapies including oxygen) tailored to patients’ needs and conditions, either in response to a request by the treating team or self-initialised.Learn about EPA 3 Communicate about patient care, including accurate documentation and written and verbal information to facilitate high-quality care at transition points and referral.Learn about EPA 4

 

 

 

From 5th May,  Northern Doctors Education (NDE) has commenced an EPA pilot in: Surgical Unit 2,  Surgical Unit 4 and Urology.

  2. It is highly recommended that you watch this short PMCV video to strengthen your understanding of EPAs and how they are incorporated into your training journey.

  4. The EPA assessment involves an observer directly supervising you while completing an activity.
  5. You are required to complete one of the four EPAs for the pilot.
  6. EPAs are in addition to Mid and End of term Assessments.

  2. Training video here. – EPA Assessors /Supervisors are required to complete training prior to assessing an EPA. AMC  advised that completion of other EPA training is not recognised as prior learning due to the unique nature and requirements of EPAs. Video is designed to support your understanding of EPAs and the assessment process to enable you to complete an EPA assessment. Once you have watched the training video email Northern Doctors Education to update your record on the LMS.
