Northern Health JMSA (Junior Medical Staff Association) 2026 Committee Election process
- Members of the 2026 JMSA Executive Committee shall be elected by all financial/paying JMSA Doctors in Training (including interns, residents, registrars and fellows) via an online vote
- Members of the 2026 JMSA General Committee shall be elected by the new 2026 JMSA Executive Committee
- Efforts shall be made to ensure representation from staff across the training levels
- Minimum Expectations of JMSA Committee members:
- Engagement in elected role
- Minimum of 50% attendance at meetings
- Actively engage in JMSA activities
- Should a committee member fail to meet the requisite attendance threshold, their other contributions to the association will be considered
- If a committee member’s contributions are deemed unsatisfactory, the member will not be eligible to receive any formal recognition of JMSA Committee membership
- Please note that you must have an active JMSA membership (please refer to your recent payslip to confirm active membership) to nominate yourself for a 2025 JMSA Committee position
- If you do not have an active JMSA membership, please join prior to Thursday February 27th with the JMSA Membership Form emailed to jmsa@nh.org.au and northerndoctorsworkforce@nh.org.au
- For an executive committee member position, we prefer that you have worked at Northern health for at least 1 year

- Nominations will close on Thursday 27th February at 11:59pm
- The 2026 Committee will be announced via email Friday 28th February
- The first JMSA monthly meeting will occur on Tuesday 11th March at 7pm (note to avoid Labour Day as monthly meetings would usually be the 2nd Monday of the Month)
Executive Committee Position Descriptions
Co-presidents x2
- Represent and lead the JMSA
- Preside at all meetings at which he/she is present
- Have a vote and a casting vote
- Delegate duties to other committee members as appropriate
- Represent the JMSA and JMO cohort at the following meetings: (or arrange a delegate where required)
- JMO Forum
- SMSA monthly meeting
- Chair the JMSA monthly meetings
- Provide monthly update via email or Northern Doctors website to all members
Secretary x1
- Maintain up-to-date lists of junior medical staff, and create email contact list groups
- Organise monthly meetings
- Send reminders of upcoming meetings to members
- Book meeting rooms
- Send out agenda at least 3 days prior to meeting
- Record minutes of all meetings
- Record attendance of members at meetings and check in on members who fall below minimum attendance requirement at mid-year
- Conduct all correspondence from the JMSA email account
- Perform administrative tasks
Co-treasurers x 2
- Maintain and facilitate the records of the finances of JMSA
- Manage the bank accounts held by the JMSA as account signatories
- Create an annual budget prior to the first monthly meeting in February 2025
- Advise and guide the JMSA Committee on expenditure for events throughout the year
- Provide a report of the JMSA’s finances at JMSA committee meetings at least twice per year
- Organise payments and reimbursements for expenses incurred by JMSA
- Liaise with social representatives to oversee event budgets
- Work closely with the Sponsorship Director to ensure long-term financial sustainability for JMSA
- Oversee the portfolio working closely with the membership & promotions officer
- Work closely with the membership & promotions officers to monitor JMSA membership activity and to seek partnerships to secure member exclusive discounts for JMSA members
Sponsorship Director x1
- Update sponsorship prospectus at the end of each year
- Oversee the sponsorship portfolio, working closely with the sponsorship officers
- Delegate responsibilities to guide the sponsorship portfolio to seek sponsorship for the JMSA, events and weekly lunches or morning teas
- Work closely with the executive team, wellbeing representatives, social representatives and education representatives to help seek sponsorship for events
- Liaise with Northern Health SMSA and Hospital Executive Committee for sponsorship of JMSA events
- Serve as an additional bank account signatory for the JMSA bank account to monitor sponsorship payments and oversee bank activities
- Work closely with the co-treasurers to ensure long-term financial sustainability for JMSA
General Committee Position Descriptions
ECO Representative x1
- Liaise with the Northern Health Green Team
- Investigate and implement opportunities to improve the environmental impact at the Northern Health
- Mange the compost bin in ressies
- Manage the garden and indoor plants in ressies in conjunction with the ressies reps
Education Representatives x 2
- Work with the Medical Education Unit re: Intern & HMO formal teaching program
- JMSA representatives on the Committee of Medical Education
- Organise educational opportunities for medical students and junior medical staff
- Put on regular workshops through the year
- Advertise external education opportunities
- Support the medical education unit to ensure the education calendar is up to date with current northern health education events
IMG Representative x1
- Represent the interests of IMGs
- Encourage engagement of IMG JMOs with JMSA social events
- Organize IMG specific education sessions with support of Medical Education Unit
- Update the IMG Rover annually
IT Representative x1
- Be proficient or willing to learn the program Wordpress (no coding involved)
- Maintain the JMSA section of the Northern Doctors webpage
- Attend the Medtasker working group monthly meetings and communicate the meetings to the JMSA members
- Seek other opportunities to ensure the JMO perspective is included in the implementation of NH IT projects, including changes required to the EMR
Membership and Promotions Representatives x2
- Monitor and update the JMSA Facebook page
- Assist in the promotion of JMSA social events, including the designing of posters and photography
- Encourage increased membership to JMSA at regular opportunities
- Obtain an updated JMSA paying members list from payroll monthly
Research Representative x1
- Liaise with Research Leads in units
- Develop Hospital wide research database
- Run workshops to teach JMOs about research
- Represent JMSA in the Northern Health Research week
- Actively promote research opportunities available in Northern Health
Sponsorship Representatives x2
- Obtain sponsorship for events and activities
- Work under the guidance of the sponsorship and membership director
- Liaise with Promotions & Membership, Social, Wellbeing reps early in the year to plan out the sponsorship requirements for the year
- Update the 2025 Prospectus and send to all potential sponsors
- Actively seek out new sponsors
Ressies Representatives x2+
- Management of ressies
- Monthly food supplies from Costco (Costco membership will be reimbursed)
- Weekly Friday pizza supply
- Monitor the cleaning status of ressies and report to ISS when required
- Arrange for 6 monthly carpet cleaning (through MWF) and outdoor pressure wash occurs (through MWF/ADHOC)
- Ensure daily kitchen supply of milk/juice/bread/spread/fresh fruit occurs
- Weekly clean out of un-labelled food in the fridge
- Water the plants in liaison with the eco team
- Monitor the access to the locker room and arrange for annual locker clean out
- Support the social and wellbeing team to run events in ressies
- Monitor the noticeboard and ensure posters are only pinned to the noticeboard area
- Ensure ressies continues to be a clean and welcoming space for JMSA members
Social Representatives x2+
- Organise regular social events- x1 per rotation
- Organise the annual Northern Health Doctors Ball, with support from a Ball Subcommittee
- Ensure events are accessible and welcoming to all JMSA members
- Liaise and assist with ressies reps where possible
Wellbeing Representatives x2+
- Provide a point of contact for JMSA members in need of support and direct them to resources available
- Organise wellbeing events- Ramadan snack packs, easter lunch, crazy socs 4 docs day, ruok day, bubble tea day etc
- Advocate on issues that impact training Doctor wellbeing
- Liaise and assist with ressies reps where possible
Stream Representatives
Anaesthetics Representative x1
- Advocate on behalf of JMOs working in the Anaesthetics Department
- Act as point of contact for staff in the units with concerns or suggestions
- Regularly Report the conditions and staffing within these units
ED Representative x1
- Advocate on behalf of JMOs working in the Emergency Department
- Act as point of contact for staff in the units with concerns or suggestions
- Regularly report the conditions and staffing within these units
GP Representative x1
The GP training representative will be either a Northern Health JMO accepted to a GP training program or a local GP registrar completing GP training and hospital based terms
- Support Northern Health JMSa members interested in GP training through the GP interest whatsapp group
- Liasie with the Northern Health GP Liaison Officer and RACGP/ACRRM to support members through the GP application process
- Run careers nights, information sessions, exam and interview practice sessions
ICU Representative x1
- Advocate on behalf of JMOs working in the ICU Department
- Act as point of contact for staff in the units with concerns or suggestions
- Regularly report the conditions and staffing within these units
Intern Representatives x2
- Advocate on behalf of the intern cohort at Northern Health
- Act as point of contact for members in the units with concerns or suggestions
- Regularly report the conditions and staffing within these units
Medicine Representatives x2
- Advocate on behalf of JMOs working in the medical units
- Act as a JMSA point of contact for staff in these units with concerns or suggestions
- Regularly report the conditions and staffing within these units
- Suggest and facilitate educational events in consultation with the education officer(s)
O & G Representative x1
- Advocate on behalf of JMOs working int the O&G Department
- Act as point of contact for staff in the units with concerns or suggestions
- Regularly Report the conditions and staffing within these units
Paediatrics Representative x1
- Advocate on behalf of JMOs working int the Paediatrics Department
- Act as point of contact for staff in the units with concerns or suggestions
- Regularly Report the conditions and staffing within these units
Psychiatry Representative x1
- Advocate on behalf of JMOs working int the Psychiatry Department
- Act as point of contact for staff in the units with concerns or suggestions
- Regularly Report the conditions and staffing within these units
Surgical Representatives x2
- Advocate on behalf of JMOs working in the surgical units
- Act as a JMSA point of contact for staff in these units with concerns or suggestions
- Regularly report the conditions and staffing within these units
- Sit on and represent the Northern surgical JMOs on the Austin/Northern Surgical Association (ANSA)
- Suggest and facilitate educational events in consultation with the education officers
