How many Interns positions offered in 2012 by Northern Health?
Northern Health will be recruiting 47 Interns for 2012.
Northern Health will be recruiting interns independently from Austin Health in 2012.
How will independent recruitment affect me?
This means you will be hired by and work at Northern Health for the whole intern year. However HMOs and registrars are still joint appointments and rotate between Northern and Austin. Interns from Northern Health will be given equal priority in terms of recruitment to joint HMO positions in 2013.
What are the criteria for selection for interns?
We select that best candidates using the following weighting: 70% based on academic record, 20% references & interviews and 10% CV.
All clinical schools like to take their own best students back but there are always additional positions to fill. Last year we took about 40 students from other clinical schools. Once candidates are selected a list is submitted to the PMCV who complete the computer matching.
What Intern Rotations are offered at Northern Health?
Core terms for all interns include General Medicine, Surgery and Emergency Medicine. A variety of non-core rotations include:
- Aged Care/Stroke
- Anaesthetics / Preadmission
- Orthopaedics
- Psychiatry
- Vascular/Thoracics
- Radiology/Ortho/Ambulatory Care
- PGPPP (Prevocational General Practice Placement Program) at Korumburra
- Emergency Medicine/Primary Care at Kyneton
- Urology (new in 2012)
- Obstetrics & Gynaecology (new in 2012)
How do I choose the rotations available?
Once you are offered a position you will be asked to rank your preferences from the rotations available for the year. Rotations are allocated taking into consideration your preferences.
What Medical Education programs are available for Interns?
Weekly Intern Program – Tuesday 12.30pm, protected teaching time (we hold your pagers), hot food.
Other education sessions include:
- Grand Rounds in Medicine and Surgery
- Friday Medical Unit Presentations attended by the Professor of Medicine
- Unit Specific Medical and Surgical Unit Meetings
Who can I turn to for support or advice?
There is a dedicated Supervisor of Intern Training who attends most educations sessions. They are also available for general advice on careers, education, feedback as well as offering pastoral support. This continues in the HMO years with a dedicated HMO 2/3 Supervisor.
What other educational and training programs are available?
There is an extensive range of additional programs to support prevocational and vocational training. There are dedicated Supervisors of Training for Interns, HMO2s, HMO3s, BPT, SET and GP Trainees.

Specialty training programs
You can train in almost every specialty at Northern Health. Specialty training programs include: Medicine, Surgery, GP, O&G, Paediatrics, ED, Anaesthetics, Radiology, Pathology, Psychiatry, Palliative Care, Renal Medicine, ICU Medicine.
Workshops and special programs
Surgical Skills Workshops for interns, GP Skills Workshops: Sports Medicine, Diabetes & Dermatology.
Career Related – GP & SET mock interviews, GP Information Night, Career Forums &anmp; Professional Development Evenings on Choosing a Specialty, Research, Working Overseas etc.
What should I expect as an Orientation to the Organisation?
The Orientation Program is held over three days prior to the first rotation and includes a series of skills stations such as basic life support, fluid balance, urinary catheters and cannulation, a shadowing day with the outgoing Intern where you are introduced to the Unit and given a comprehensive handover of your patients. A hospital tour is also provided. The Question and Answer segment conducted by a panel of outgoing interns is considered very valuable.
Can rosters be swapped?
Rosters may be changed/swapped as long as this is done by mutual consent with the other junior doctor and there are no gaps left in the roster. Care must be taken that roster swaps do not affect core-training requirements. Roster swaps must be approved by the HMO Manager.
Is there a social group or staff functions that I may join?
The HMO Society hold regular weekly functions in our prize-winning HMO quarters. In addition, there is an annual Ball promoted each year.

Do I need to attend an interview?
Yes, an interview is compulsory. Everyone who submits an application will be offered an interview. All interviews will occur at The Northern Hospital with a panel of two people that include one clinician. Interviews will be 15 minutes long.
How do I know when to attend the interview?
YOU must book your own interview time on line.
When you submit your application you will receive a confirmation email that will include a link to the website where you can book the interview.
